Peck's Bad Bad Boy and His Pa, No. 2

Peck's Bad Bad Boy and His Pa, No. 2 was first published in 1883 by Belford, Clarke and Company. There have been several title variations for this book including The Grocery Man and Peck's Bad Boy and Peck's Bad Boy No. 2 being a Continuation of Peck's Bad Boy and His Pa.

This title has numerous vignettes involving the "bad boy" similar to those in Peck's Bad Boy and His Pa. This book has 27 chapters included in its 240 pages (which all editions appear to have). All the editions have fifteen illustrations done by Louis F. Braunhold.

Braunhold (1854-) was a native of Chicago who was educated in St. Charles, Illinois. He was known as an engraver and lithographer. He illustrated numerous books and magazines articles.

True Williams (1839-1897) did illustrations for the Peck's Bad Boy combination books in the 1890's and later. He is best known for his illustrations of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

First edition title page

I have seen two different copyright pages for the 1883 books. One notes Donohue and Henneberry as the printer and binder of the book at the base of the copyright page. One does not note this company. I think that the page that mentions the binder is the later of the two since 1884 Belford, Clarke Peck books do show the binder at the base of the title page.

1890 Format

Rose Publishing Company, Toronto 1883
Rose published two editions of The Grocery Man and Peck's Bad Boy. A hardcover book was published with 152 pages. Its print date is unclear. This title was also published in The Rose Library as #41. Therefore it was published in August, 1883. Since the United States copyright date was granted on August 24, 1883, this may mean that the Rose Publishing Company copy is the true first.

Butler Brothers, New York and Chicago 1889
This title was No. 90 in the Electric Series. This series in wraps was published in 1889-1890.

Donohue, Henneberry Company, Chicago 1890

This title was one of seven that Lovell published in its 1891 Oxford Edition.

Morrill, Higgins and Company, Chicago 1892
This publisher printed a number of Peck's books. Because of its short publishing history (1892-1893) they are extremely scarce. Peck's Bad Boy and His Pa, No. 2 in the Midland Series. This series was in wraps.

Two combination books of Peck's Bad Boy No. 1 and No. 2 were published by the firm. One was in the Idylwild Series and was in wraps. The other was not in any series and was published in wraps and hardcover at 50 cents and $1.25 respectively. These were the first of the Peck combination books.

None of this company's Peck books have been seen.
