Here
is the 4" x 2.25" business card of Fred W. Burke. On the front of the
card is Burke's picture on on the back it states "Peck's Sun".
Burke was a founder and editor in 1889 of the LaCrosse Daily
Press. He left that paper in 1890. He subsequently moved to Milwaukee
where he worked as an editor for several papers including at Peck's
Sun.
His fame however comes from an 1896 bet he lost in which he
wagered that McKinley would lose to Bryan in the presidential race. The
loser of the bet was to renounce his citizenship and move from the
United States forever. Reports note that Burke moved to Cuba.
